If you're going to be buying your teen a car this year, there are some things they'll need to know before you hand them the keys. Driving a car is a big responsibility, and it's something that your teen shouldn't take lightly. One way to ensure that your teen takes responsibility for their new car is to put them in charge of the basic maintenance. These are the basic needs that their car will need, but that won't require any specialized training to perform. Here are four maintenance items that your teen should know how to perform on their car.
Oil Changes
When it comes to owning a car, the first thing you should teach your teen about is the oil change. That doesn't mean you'll need to teach them how to perform an oil change, although that is something useful to know. However, it does mean that your teen should learn how to determine when their car will be in need of an oil change. Knowing how to monitor the mileage will ensure that teen knows when their car will need another oil change.
Tire Pressure
You never know when your teen is going to have trouble with their tire pressure. Unfortunately, you might not be available when the tires on your teens car requires a few more pounds of air pressure. To make sure that your teen doesn't run into problems, be sure to teach them how to check the pressure in their tires. It's also a good idea to teach them how to change a tire. This will be vital training for your teen to have, especially if they're going to be doing a lot of driving.
Windshield Wipers
When it rains, you need to know that the windshield wipers on your teens car are ready to go. To make sure your teen has a clear view when they're driving in the rain, teach them how to inspect their windshield wipers for damage. You should also teach them how to change their own windshield wipers, as well as how to select the proper wipers for their car. Knowing how to select the proper wipers, and how to install them, will help ensure that your teen is never left without a clear view.
Fluid Levels
Now that your teen is going to be driving their own car, they'll need to know how to check the fluid levels. Don't just stop at the oil levels though. Be sure to teach them how to check the levels for their brake fluid, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, and windshield wiper fluid.
